Provide your indoor plants with a modicum of care, and they will reward you by staying alive and healthy.
- Observe their “body language” so you can respond to problems (like wilting leaves) fast.
- Use a high-quality organic potting soil. Remember to repot when the roots fill the container.
- Provide light as needed.
- Because the compost in my potting mix provides slow-release nourishment, I don’t fertilize between November and March, when there’s less light. In spring and summer, I apply fish emulsion. Yes, it smells at first. Go out for a few hours while the odor dissipates.
- Keep the thermostat cool (below 65°F at night) to dissuade many insect pests.
- For the rare pest infestation, use insecticidal soap or other organic controls (always read and follow the label recommendations). Even organic pesticides must be used with care, so apply sprays outdoors wearing a face mask and gloves. The beauty of indestructible plants is that I rarely have to resort to this.
